Description
Fields of the Elysium Locomotive by John D Williams is a toned black and white monochrome art photograph blending elements of street photography with minimalist surrealism.
At first glance the image appears to be that of a train moving across grassy plain, a legion of dark storm clouds in a blue sky overhead threatens a downpour. People appear to be milling about the train, getting on and off. Flags blow freely in the cool summer sun; however this is just a comical illusion.
The vision is not real. This is not a train engine and accompanying carriages.
So what is it then? A circus event, a shelter from the storm, a home for the roaming people within the grassland, a defense against the scorching summer heat what is the key to this image?
We are in fact looking at a mass of people, who are observing something else, in this case a horse racing event that we as viewers are unable to see. It is a mystery though; that we are not able to view the activity that has entranced most of the public we are looking at. It doesn't even have to be racing horses, it could be a marathon a car race, a parade, and we are not able to tell.
